Founding Data Engineer
About the Company:
A stealthy, well-capitalized healthcare technology startup is quietly dismantling one of the most stubborn and unsexy bottlenecks in American medicine: the way provider networks are designed. While consumers and payers alike struggle to navigate fragmented, outdated provider data—often relying on manual processes and incomplete directories—this company has built a platform that merges best-in-class data assets with purpose-built software. The result? Healthcare organizations can finally build networks that are not only clinically excellent but also aligned with the personal and logistical needs of patients.
Backed by elite investors including Tiger Global and Primary Ventures, this is a team of healthcare operators, data architects, and product builders who value craft over chaos. The culture is high-trust, low-ego, and execution-obsessed. There are no tourists here—only people who want to fix something that actually matters. With early customers already realizing tangible value, the company is entering a phase of intentional, ambitious growth.
The Role:
This is not a “come maintain the ETL” role. This is a greenfield, ground-floor opportunity to architect the data foundation of a company that is fundamentally changing how healthcare matches patients to providers.
The company is seeking its first dedicated Data Engineer—someone who can design, build, and own production-grade data pipelines from scratch. This person will not only move data; they will shape how the company thinks about data as a product. They will transform manual reporting workflows into seamless, scalable application features. They will ingest and reconcile massive, messy datasets from enterprise partners and turn raw bits into customer delight. And they will establish the observability, testing, and quality standards that the entire engineering organization will inherit.
This is a NYC-based role, with three days per week in-person collaboration. For exceptional candidates, remote with quarterly travel may be considered.
What You’ll Do:
- Architect and implement scalable data infrastructure that powers both internal analytics and customer-facing product features.
- Partner with analysts, data scientists, and software engineers to turn raw healthcare data into high-leverage insights and application logic.
- Productize reporting workflows—moving customers from static CSV exports to dynamic, real-time, in-app experiences.
- Design high-volume ingestion pipelines capable of handling the scale and complexity required by the company’s largest enterprise partners.
- Reduce the latency between raw data ingestion and customer impact, unlocking faster iteration and better decision-making.
- Champion data observability, quality, and integrity across the entire pipeline, from source to consumption.
- Optimize and tune existing pipelines for performance, scalability, and cost efficiency.
Who You Are:
- You bring 3–5 years of data engineering experience and are equally comfortable reasoning about a Python application codebase as you are designing a columnar warehouse schema.
- You have production experience with both columnar data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift) and transactional databases, and you understand the underlying structures required to design performant tables and tuned queries.
- You are fluent in dbt and believe in modeling data with clarity and maintainability.
- You have extensive experience with batch processing at scale and know how to orchestrate complex workflows using tools like Dagster or Airflow.
- You write Python with intention—clean, testable, modular code—and you have opinions on how to leverage LLM coding tools to augment, not replace, engineering judgment.
- You thrive in small, cross-functional teams where scope is broad, ownership is real, and “that’s not my job” isn’t in your vocabulary.
Why Join:
- First-mover advantage. You won’t be one of fifty data engineers. You’ll be the data engineer, with the mandate and agency to define the practice.
- Real ownership, not theater. This is a team where titles don’t protect egos and the best idea wins. Your contributions will directly shape product direction and company strategy.
- Mission with teeth. This isn’t abstract “healthcare innovation.” This is fixing a broken system that affects millions of patients and the providers who care for them.
- A+ teammates. You’ll work alongside former operators, repeat founders, and technologists who have scaled companies you’ve heard of. They are also genuinely good people.
- Thoughtful scale. The company is growing deliberately—not burning cash for headlines, but building a durable, capital-efficient business.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Salary range: $150,000–$175,000, determined by experience, skill set, and location.
- Significant equity package—because ownership isn’t just a value, it’s a compensation philosophy.
- Comprehensive health insurance, commuter benefits, and a stipend for home office equipment.
- Unlimited PTO, grounded in a culture that actually respects time away from work.
- NYC-based collaboration space with a team that enjoys being together.
Location:
New York City (hybrid, 3 days in-office). Exceptional remote candidates will be considered with quarterly in-office commitments.
