About the company

A startup building the most comprehensive maritime intelligence platform in the world. Its flagship sensing system turns commercial and civilian vessels into a persistent, distributed sensing network pairing HD video, AI, radar, RF sensing, and AIS to deliver real-time maritime domain awareness at global scale. With more than 600 sensors deployed across 25+ countries and over 400,000 vessels identified outside of AIS, the company is redefining what ocean surveillance and safety can look like.

The team is mission-driven and fast-moving, building dual-use technology for defense agencies, coast guards, and commercial maritime operators. For anyone who wants their work running on vessels crossing every ocean on earth, this is that job.

The role

The company is hiring Hardware Test & Integration Engineers to keep its test infrastructure running and expanding as fast as the sensor roadmap does. The work centers on maintaining and growing the hardware-in-the-loop test bench at the Virginia headquarters integrating hardware, configuring software, and writing the occasional automated test script. This is a hands-on integration role, not a software development role.

That infrastructure then gets used to evaluate new sensor types and produce clear results that inform product decisions. The same rigor travels into the field, testing hardware aboard vessels mostly around the DC/Maryland/Virginia area and at other U.S. sites as needed. Throughout, this engineer works across the organization to keep test data and test work secure, efficient, and productive.

Responsibilities

  1. Design, build, operate, and maintain test infrastructure at the DC-area office and at future remote and vessel deployment sites
  2. Develop, refine, and run manual and automated test procedures to evaluate both current and candidate hardware
  3. Work across engineering and product teams to prioritize and accelerate evaluation of new sensor models and modalities, feeding results directly into the engineering roadmap
  4. Use and contribute to shared physical and digital test infrastructure across multiple sites and disciplines, coordinating scheduling, logistics, and configuration with the teams that depend on it
  5. Keep test data, equipment, and procedures organized, secure, and well documented so results stay trustworthy, traceable, and reusable across teams
  6. Run field validation testing aboard vessels in the broader DC area and at other U.S. sites as needed, adapting bench procedures to real maritime deployment conditions

Required qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering, robotics/mechatronics, test engineering, or a related hands-on technical field — or equivalent experience
  2. Hardware and testing expertise: 4–12 years building and maintaining test benches, including proficiency with hand and power tools, 3D printing, integration of mixed custom and COTS hardware, and execution of manual and automated test procedures
  3. Demonstrated experience building or maintaining test benches or infrastructure — integrating COTS instrumentation, computers, and sensors, and ensuring network access for remote engineers
  4. Cross-team collaboration: a proven ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering and product teams while keeping strong documentation and traceability habits
  5. Operational initiative: genuine interest in conducting field testing in maritime environments and traveling as needed to hit project goals, plus the ability to drive projects forward independently through ambiguity, limited resources, and tight deadlines
  6. U.S. citizenship and a valid driver's license; a current security clearance, or the ability to obtain one, is preferred
