About the Company

This organization is the world’s first fitness company, operating at the intersection of hardware, software, and artificial intelligence. The mission is to unlock human potential by transforming sleep from a passive state into a personalized, data-driven performance tool. Recognized as one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies and a two-time honoree on TIME’s “Best Inventions” list, the company builds advanced technology trusted by high performers, athletes, and health-conscious consumers across 30 countries.

The team operates with a high-performance mentality, characterized by speed, focus, and a relentless pursuit of impact. It is a group of world-class talent dedicated to iterating and refining until excellence is achieved. This is an environment for those who are driven to build at the edge of what is possible, embracing a mindset of ownership and intensity akin to top-tier athletics or elite engineering organizations.

The Opportunity

The organization is seeking a Research Scientist with a deep passion for leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to convert complex sensor data into intelligent, personalized health and fitness experiences. While the current portfolio includes metrics like heart rate variability and sleep scoring, the future relies on the imagination and technical skill of this team to unlock new, meaningful biometrics that drive lasting behavioral change.

This role sits within a cross-functional R&D and production team. The individual will be responsible for prototyping novel algorithms and shipping solutions directly to users. The ideal candidate is deeply passionate about health technologies, tackles problems with a systems-level approach, and makes data-driven decisions to deliver best-in-class products.

How You’ll Contribute

This role involves leading high-impact initiatives that bridge cutting-edge research with tangible product features. Example projects include:

  1. Adaptive Thermoregulation Systems: Advancing the core autonomic temperature regulation framework. This involves designing and refining closed-loop control policies and reinforcement learning models that continuously learn from micro-events—such as restlessness or awakenings—to optimize real-time comfort and sleep quality.
  2. Multimodal Health Foundation Models: Developing a foundational model that integrates physiological signals with environmental context. Leveraging one of the world’s largest repositories of sleep data (over one billion hours), this work involves synthesizing inputs from proprietary hardware and wearables to create a holistic view of the user’s health.
  3. Physiological Behavior Simulation: Building high-fidelity simulators that model the causal relationship between daily behaviors (exercise, nutrition, stress) and nocturnal recovery outcomes. This initiative aims to create a non-invasive, always-on model of healthy aging powered by continuous physiological data streams.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

  1. Technical Expertise: Deep specialization in one or more areas of machine learning and artificial intelligence, such as self-supervised learning, multimodal learning, reinforcement learning, model optimization, or large language models (LLMs).
  2. Domain Application: A strong interest in and aptitude for applying machine learning to health-related problems, including experience drawing actionable insights from large, complex datasets.
  3. Engineering Proficiency: Proficiency in a programming language such as Python or C/C++ for data manipulation, model training, and prototyping.
  4. Experience: A minimum of 3 years of practical experience applying machine learning to solve real-world problems, or equivalent quantitative research and analytics experience.
  5. Education & Publications: A PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field with a notable publication record; alternatively, a BS/MS with publications at top-tier venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ACL).

Why Join

  1. Culture of Excellence: Innovation is the standard, not the exception. The team is dedicated to building hardware and software that pushes the boundaries of technology. The flagship product, a temperature-regulated sleep system, is beloved by hundreds of thousands of customers globally.
  2. Immediate Impact: From the first day, the individual will take on substantial responsibilities that directly influence the core business and product success. This is a small, empowered team where ownership over projects leads to tangible results and accelerated professional growth.
  3. Exceptional Collaboration: The opportunity to work alongside some of the brightest minds in the industry, where intellectual curiosity and a passion for breakthroughs are the norms.
  4. Equitable Compensation: Every full-time team member receives equity participation, ensuring that individual contributions are directly aligned with the company’s success. This includes periodic equity refreshments based on performance.
  5. Unique Benefits: Employees receive the company’s flagship product for their own use, alongside a comprehensive benefits package.

This organization is an equal opportunity employer, committed to fostering a diverse community where every individual feels empowered to flourish and grow, regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or Veteran status.
