Its flagship sensing system turns commercial and civilian vessels into a persistent, distributed sensing network pairing HD video, AI, radar, RF sensing, and AIS to deliver real-time maritime domain awareness at global scale. With more than 600 sensors deployed across 25+ countries and over 400,000 vessels identified outside of AIS, the company is redefining what ocean surveillance and safety can look like.

The team is mission-driven and fast-moving, building dual-use technology for defense agencies, coast guards, and commercial maritime operators.

The role

This engineer helps build and scale the operator-facing application the product defense analysts, coast guard operators, and commercial fleet managers use to monitor, query, and act on maritime intelligence in real time.

The work is owned end to end, from backend geospatial fusion through to React components, and it directly shapes how customers interact with data streaming in from sensors deployed around the world. The team is distributed, so this person needs to work well asynchronously.

Responsibilities

1. Design, build, and ship full-stack features across the React web portal and Spring backend services
2. Develop and maintain versioned RESTful APIs that surface sensor data, vessel telemetry, and AI detection output to end users
3. Architect and evolve the microservices layer running on AWS, holding reliability, scalability, and low latency under high-throughput data conditions
4. Optimize PostGIS queries and data access patterns to support bulk artifact retrieval, map rendering, and time-series analysis across hundreds of vessels
5. Build the internal admin and fleet management tools the operations team uses to configure, monitor, and support deployed sensor units
6. Work closely with design to implement pixel-precise UI components for data-dense map views and sensor visualizations
7. Take part in on-call rotations, owning service reliability and incident response for your services
8. Review code, mentor engineers, and raise the technical bar across the team

Preferred qualifications

1. 5+ years of professional full-stack software engineering experience
2. Strong command of React and modern JavaScript/TypeScript for building complex, stateful web applications
3. Solid backend depth in Spring Boot, including designing and building REST APIs at scale
4. Hands-on PostGIS experience, with the ability to design schemas and write queries that perform
5. Working knowledge of AWS services (S3, Lambda, ECS/EKS, IoT Core, CloudWatch) and infrastructure-as-code tooling
6. Experience with microservices architecture, containerization with Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines
7. The ability to read and reason about complex data flows involving real-time streams, large media assets, and geospatial coordinates
8. Strong written and verbal communication

Bonus points

1. Experience with geospatial data, mapping libraries such as Mapbox, Leaflet, or deck.gl, or AIS and vessel tracking systems
2. Familiarity with WebSockets or server-sent events for real-time UI updates
3. A background in defense, maritime, or government software with exposure to data security requirements
4. Experience integrating ML model output into user-facing product features
