Our hiring partner, a leading direct-to-consumer lifestyle brand experiencing rapid growth, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their Technology team. Building performant, scalable cloud service environments is a complex challenge, and this organization knows it firsthand—having built a cloud-based microservices platform from the ground up to power their online customer experience and drive the logistics and processing of their garment distribution centers.
This role is ideal for a Senior Engineer with the initiative and expertise to help mature this platform into a stable, scalable, and robust backbone for launching the next wave of product innovations. The individual will need strong experience designing and building microservices backed by relational and non-relational databases, solid confidence with JVM-based tools, and a reasonable aptitude for designing and integrating Kubernetes services with cloud-based platform APIs.
Beyond individual contribution, this Senior Engineer will bring experience that extends to leading design for moderately complex features, driving communication between teams, providing critical feedback, coordinating with others, and offering mentorship as needed. They will participate in incident response and post-mortem processes to improve system reliability. The ideal candidate is adept at picking up new technologies and patterns, comfortable discussing and debating the pros and cons of various approaches, and ready to tackle new challenges with a supportive team of creative and hard-working professionals.
Role Responsibilities
- Architectural Leadership: Produce architectural proposals and actively engage in discussions and decision-making for new features and platform evolution, shaping the technical direction of the organization.
- Product Collaboration: Partner with the product team to design solutions for stakeholder features and inform product decisions through rigorous technical feasibility analysis.
- Mentorship & Development: Mentor junior engineers through code review, pair programming, and design discussions, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.
- Full Lifecycle Delivery: Own the complete lifecycle of deployable features—from design, coding, and testing to configuration, documentation, deployment, and ongoing support.
- Operational Excellence: Contribute to operational guidelines, system reliability practices, and post-mortem analysis for production incidents, driving continuous improvement in system resilience.
- Process Improvement: Teach and enforce development methodologies while proactively identifying improvement opportunities in the codebase, tooling, and processes.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with QA and Platform Engineering teams to test code and keep integrated testing environments unblocked, ensuring smooth delivery pipelines.
- Technical Guidance: Provide technical guidance to cross-functional teams on integration approaches and system constraints, enabling feature delivery while evolving the overall architecture.
Role Qualifications
Experience
- 5-7 years of software engineering experience, with approximately 2 years of senior-level responsibilities including taking ownership of designs or projects and coordinating work across teams.
Technical Expertise – Languages & Frameworks
- Operational knowledge of one or more server-side object-oriented programming languages. JVM languages (Java, Kotlin, Scala) are strongly preferred, though experience with Python, Go, or Node/TypeScript will also be considered.
- Solid confidence with JVM-based frameworks such as Spring and data persistence with Postgres and other database technologies.
Microservices & Distributed Systems
- Strong experience designing, building, and operating microservices architectures, with expertise in RESTful APIs, HTTP protocols, and service integration patterns.
- Able to speak comfortably about microservices architecture, distributed system design, streaming data, messaging technologies (e.g., Kafka, Spark, Storm), and database design patterns.
- Deep understanding of distributed system design patterns, consistency models, and trade-offs in microservices architectures.
Cloud & Containerization
- Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or other major cloud providers (AWS, Azure), with knowledge of container technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience designing and integrating Kubernetes services with cloud-based platform APIs, focused on driving toward zero-downtime deployments.
Database & Data Modeling
- Hands-on experience with relational databases (Postgres, AlloyDB) and a strong understanding of data modeling, query optimization, and schema evolution.
Engineering Practices
- Experience and enthusiasm for testing, test-driven development, and building reliable, well-tested systems.
- Proficient with leveraging AI tools in day-to-day development tasks such as code generation, debugging, and documentation.
Soft Skills
- Able to hit the ground running and quickly familiarize yourself with an existing codebase and toolset.
- Able to propose and walk through solutions in technical leadership discussions and communicate effectively across functional teams.
AI/LLM Proficiency
- Practical experience using Large Language Models (ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, Copilot, etc.) for work tasks.
- Understanding of prompt engineering and how to provide effective context to AI tools.
- Familiarity with structured AI guidance methods (system prompts, rules files, agent configurations).
- Knowledge of AI tool integration concepts (MCP, connectors, agentic workflows).
- Ability to identify opportunities where AI can drive efficiency improvements in the development lifecycle.
