Senior Data Architect

Location: Hybrid (New York, NY) | Salary: $180,000 - $220,000 + Equity + Bonus

You are an engineer who believes that data architecture is fundamentally an ethical discipline. You understand that the way we design systems dictates the level of trust and safety we can offer users. You are motivated by the immense technical challenge of building powerful, scalable data platforms that adhere to a core principle of "zero knowledge" — designing systems that process information without needing to know the sensitive details.

If you are driven to build the foundational data layer for a product that gives power back to the user, this is your role.

About Us

We are on a mission to rebuild consumer trust in the internet. Our vision is a digital world that serves users first, with individual privacy and explicit consent as its bedrock. We are building the first consumer privacy ecosystem that offers complete data ownership without compromising on user experience.

Our product is an intelligent privacy platform that acts as a "virtual cloak" for online activities. It allows users to generate unique, masked identities—emails, phone numbers, passwords, and more—giving them granular control over their personal information. We are solving one of the most critical problems of the digital age, and our data architecture is the core of that solution.

We are a well-funded Series A startup with a distributed team and a central hub in New York City.

The Role: Architect the Foundation of Trust

As a Senior Data Architect, you will be the technical leader responsible for designing, building, and scaling the secure data systems that power our entire platform. This is not a traditional data role; you will be engineering with a "privacy-by-design" mandate, ensuring our architecture is inherently secure, compliant, and scalable from the ground up.

You will work directly with our C-suite leadership (CTO, CAIO, CISO, DPO) to champion data privacy principles, turning them into robust, technical reality. Your work will enable powerful features for users while rigorously upholding our commitment to a zero-knowledge stance on personal data.

What You'll Do

  1. Design a Privacy-First Data Architecture: Architect and implement a scalable data infrastructure that supports diverse product lines, ensuring all data models are robust, efficient, and inherently compliant with global privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
  2. Build Secure Data Access Layers: Develop sophisticated data abstraction layers and APIs that provide secure, controlled access to data for internal services and platform features, guaranteeing data integrity and consistency without compromising user privacy.
  3. Lead Data Engineering Efforts: Own the full lifecycle of our data management systems, including secure data ingestion, encryption, transformation, and storage. Implement solutions for data quality, cleansing, and automated cradle-to-grave data lifecycle management.
  4. Develop Advanced Data Pipelines: Build and maintain the secure pipelines and infrastructure required for business intelligence, product analytics, and internal reporting, while advancing our vision for user-controlled data sharing.
  5. Champion Security and Privacy: Serve as a key voice in ensuring all data systems are designed with security and privacy as non-negotiable first principles.
  6. Mentor and Lead: Guide junior engineers, conduct rigorous code reviews, and establish best practices for data engineering and software development across the team.

What You'll Bring (Skills & Experience)

  1. Proven Data Architecture Expertise: 5+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or a related field, with a significant portion in a SaaS environment.
  2. Deep Technical Proficiency: Expertise in designing complex data models (NoSQL, relational) and proficiency with cloud-native data services (AWS, GCP, Azure) and big data technologies (Spark, Kafka).
  3. Strong Software Engineering Foundation: Advanced skills in a language like Python, Java, or Scala, with a background in building and managing ETL/ELT pipelines and data warehouses.
  4. Experience with Sensitive Data: A proven track record of working with highly sensitive data, ideally in a privacy-focused, security, or regulated industry.
  5. Modern Architecture Knowledge: Hands-on experience with real-time data streaming and event-driven architectures.
  6. Superior Problem-Solving: Exceptional critical-thinking skills with the ability to deconstruct and solve complex data challenges.
  7. Excellent Communication: The ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, including company leadership.

What Will Make You a Great Fit

  1. A background in cybersecurity or information security.
  2. A solid understanding of data privacy laws and standards (GDPR, CCPA, ISO 27701).
  3. Experience with data governance tools and platforms.
  4. Startup or growth-stage experience where you've had to build and scale systems rapidly.
  5. A deep, intrinsic respect for user privacy, treating our customers' data as if it were your own.
  6. A pragmatic, "get-it-done" mindset combined with a passion for elegant, scalable design.
