About the Company

This is an opportunity to join a well-capitalized fintech startup headquartered in San Francisco that is building the first of its kind—a credit card backed by real assets. By leveraging home equity, vehicles, and other assets, the company has engineered a product that offers consumers a dramatically lower APR than anything else on the market. The first product, the world's lowest APR credit card, is just the beginning.

The company has raised over $250 million in equity funding from a tier-one syndicate of investors, including Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and Max Levchin. The team is a blend of technology leaders from Microsoft and Facebook, and financial services executives from Square, Capital One, Discover, and Goldman Sachs. This is not a team of bystanders; it is a team of builders who have shipped products that became infrastructure for society—from the earliest Capital One credit cards and Square's CashApp, to Xbox, Visual Studio, and even computational research at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The Philosophy

At its core, this is a technology company. The mission is to use software and science to lower the cost of capital for consumers, solving a problem that has real, tangible impact on millions of lives.

The team operates with a unique philosophy: no task is beneath anyone. Whether it is the CEO auditing database cells for accuracy, or the compliance lead jumping on customer support calls, the collective goal is to understand every excruciating detail of the systems they build on—from legal frameworks and regulations to third-party APIs. The belief is that great products are invented at the intersection of deep domain expertise and lateral, first-principles thinking. The culture values pragmatism, speed, minimalism, and an obsessive customer-centricity.

The Role

The company is seeking a Software Engineer who is passionate about building consumer products that people love. This engineer will play a foundational role in shaping the user experience for a product that is redefining consumer finance. In this early-stage environment, there are no small tasks. Every line of code, every UI tweak, and every architectural decision has an outsized impact on the company's trajectory.

The ideal candidate has experience with metrics-driven, iterative product development. They are the type of engineer who obsesses over the debounce time on a typeahead, the layout of a card on different devices, and the exact contrast ratio that drives engagement. They build interfaces that work seamlessly, even in poor network conditions, and they think deeply about how new features will integrate with existing user flows.

What You’ll Do

  1. Build World-Class User Experiences: Take ownership of critical customer-facing features, including the development of a best-in-class credit card origination flow and a seamless video notarization solution.
  2. Drive Growth & Engagement: Partner with product and marketing leaders to execute growth tactics and engagement strategies that turn users into advocates.
  3. Architect for Scale: Help design and build the core product infrastructure from the ground up, enabling the company to scale from zero to one—and beyond.
  4. Influence the Tech Stack: This is a greenfield opportunity. The engineer will have a direct voice in shaping the technology choices and development practices for years to come.
  5. Define the Culture: As an early member of a rapidly growing engineering team, who you are will shape who the company becomes. Every voice matters in defining the norms, values, and DNA of the organization.
  6. Become a Domain Expert: Dive deep into the fintech space, learning the intricacies of the product and the regulatory landscape, such that you are able to define how products should work end-to-end.

Who You Are

  1. A Builder of Consumer Products: You have experience shipping consumer-facing applications at scale. You are obsessed with the user experience and use data to drive your decisions.
  2. A Leader of Complex Projects: You have led technically complex projects with many moving parts. You are comfortable navigating disparate systems and integrating them into a cohesive whole.
  3. A Systems Thinker: Whether you have worked on production-grade compilers, operating systems, or large distributed systems, you have a deep appreciation for how things work under the hood.
  4. Comfortable with Ambiguity: You don't need a detailed roadmap to get started. You are excited by the unknown and see it as an opportunity to figure out the answers yourself.
  5. A Deeply Curious Engineer: You are fearless about learning the details. You want to understand every minute aspect of the underlying system or process, because you know that mastery lives in the details.
  6. A Collaborative Partner: You thrive in highly collaborative environments. You are just as happy riffing on company mission or user research as you are debating software architecture.

Our Tech Stack

The team is pragmatic and uses the right tools for the job. Current technologies include:

  1. Frontend: VueJS, with a focus on responsive, performant interfaces
  2. Mobile: Swift (iOS) and Kotlin/Java (Android)
  3. Backend: Python, Typescript, PostgreSQL
  4. Cloud: AWS
