  3. Drive Innovation: Experiment boldly and confront problems of immense complexity, while actively identifying and eliminating technical debt to accelerate the entire team.
  4. Mission-Driven Work: Join a high-growth startup environment where your contributions directly shape the future of healthcare technology.

About the Role

We are seeking a Staff Applied AI/ML Scientist to join the mission to infuse cutting-edge AI/ML/GenAI into healthcare. As a Staff Applied Scientist, you will play a crucial role in developing, improving, and exploring the capabilities of multimodal LLMs to solve complex real-world problems geared towards building automation and conversational AI products.

The ideal candidate is passionate about applying AI/ML science to difficult problems and developing scalable, customized solutions. This role requires a collaborative team player who enjoys creating practical, efficient, and high-performance software that leverages LLMs, multimodal language models, and other ML techniques to build amazing capabilities for customers, partners, and employees.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Investigate the latest LLM and MLM models, evaluating and comparing accuracy and efficiency for in-domain use cases.
  2. Collaborate with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders as a specialist and subject matter expert in AI and ML science.
  3. Develop tools and processes to create data pipelines for ML training and customization.
  4. Fine-tune LLMs for the healthcare domain on proprietary data.
  5. Help develop and productionize ML solutions leveraging customized models in the fields of document understanding, search and Q&A, GenAI, and virtual agents.
  6. Work across the complete lifecycle of ML model development, including problem definition, data exploration, feature engineering, model training, validation, and deployment.
  7. Participate in code reviews, testing, and quality assurance processes.
  8. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to AI model integration, deployment, and backend services.
  9. Document and communicate research and development processes and architectural decisions.
  10. Ensure the security and compliance of healthcare data, adhering to HIPAA regulations.
  11. Solve technical problems of the highest scope and complexity for the team.
  12. Exert influence on the overall objectives and long-range goals of the team.
  13. Drive innovation with a willingness to experiment and boldly confront problems of immense complexity and scope.
  14. Actively seek out impediments to team efficiency ("technical debt"), propose and implement solutions that enable the entire team to iterate faster.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's, Master's degree or higher in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field; PhD preferred.
  2. Minimum 8 years of experience in industry with a strong focus on applied AI/ML research and development.
  3. Strong grasp of object-oriented programming, design patterns, efficient algorithms, and quality software development.
  4. Solid understanding of Machine Learning fundamentals such as deep neural networks, transformer-based LLMs and MLMs, boosted or standard decision trees, and RAG.
  5. Strong proficiency in Python and familiarity with ML libraries such as PyTorch.
  6. Experience with local training (pre-training, fine-tuning, RLHF, post-training) of open-weights autoregressive large language models like GLM, Qwen, Gemma, LLaMA, etc.
  7. Experience with open-source LLM platforms and training stacks (e.g., HuggingFace, DeepSpeed).
  8. Experience with ML platforms such as AWS SageMaker, Azure ML, Databricks, etc.
  9. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a strong capacity for logical thinking.
  10. Passion for customer, innovation, and product quality.
  11. The ability to work collaboratively across multiple disciplines in an extremely fast-paced, startup environment.
  12. Good written communication skills that enable collaboration in a remote environment.
  13. Experience in healthcare or life sciences is a plus.
